Graduate Student Research Assistantships

2012-2013 Academic Year

Application Deadline: February 3, 2012
Award Decision: February 15, 2012

The Institute for Human Adjustment is pleased to announce the availability of up to two GSRA positions (50% effort, Fall and Winter terms) for the 2012-2013 academic year. These positions are offered to encourage outstanding doctoral students to pursue research careers in areas pertinent to the Institute’s mission of promoting the well-being of children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families who are struggling with mental health, learning, and communication difficulties. These positions are also intended to facilitate the growth of faculty programs of research that have implications for the prevention, development, assessment, and treatment of difficulties in human adjustment.

The GSRA funds will be awarded to the home departments of successful faculty applicants. The faculty applicant will be responsible for identifying and mentoring the doctoral student. If the position is requested for a current UM doctoral student, the student should be named in the application. If the position is requested for an incoming student, the student’s name may be left undesignated. The faculty applicant will designate the general focus of the proposed research and the anticipated benefit of the GSRA position to the student and the individual faculty member’s program of research. Applications are especially encouraged and invited for existing or new programs of research that involve (a) active collaboration with Institute faculty and staff and/or (b) implementation at one of the Institute’s units (Psychological Clinic, University Center for the Development of Language and Literacy, University Center for the Child and Family).

Eligibility

UM faculty members who are affiliated with approved doctoral programs in any Department or School may apply. Doctoral students may not apply directly for support. Each faculty member may submit an application for only one student per year. A student is eligible for a total of only two semesters of GSRA award support from the Institute.

Application Process

Faculty application packages must include the following:

  • Complete Application Cover Form
  • A single PDF file that includes:
    • Letter from UM faculty member, which names the student, if indicated, and verifies that the student is in good standing and making satisfactory progress in the doctoral program. The letter should also serve as an endorsement and recommendation of the student in terms of their potential for scholarly research. If the position is requested for an incoming student, the student’s name may be left undesignated. Designate the general focus of the proposed research and the anticipated benefit of the GSRA position to the student and the individual faculty member’s program.
    • A brief statement about the program of research and possible research involvement of the doctoral student (no more than 1000 words). If the application requests a GSRA for a current doctoral student, it is anticipated that this statement will be written primarily by the student. The statement should clearly describe the doctoral student’s planned research, and explain how support from the IHA will enable the student to enhance their research productivity and preparation for a research career. Scholarly references should be included (not included in word limit).
    • If the application requests a GSRA for a current doctoral student, a brief curriculum vitae should be included for the doctoral student. This should include information about the student’s educational background; major awards/honors received; membership in professional organizations, as applicable; and a complete list of publications and presentations.
  • Applications should be submitted by email in a single PDF to Brenda Foster, Assistant Director, Institute for Human Adjustment, iha-gsra-apps@umich.edu, 530 Church Street, Ann Arbor, Michigan, 48109-1043. They must be received in her office by 5:00 pm on February 3rd. (Award decisions will be made by February 15th, 2012)
